The new school year is the perfect time to invite students to experiment with language in a way that sparks creativity and self expression. Try poemRENOVATION as a quick, flexible activity that can fit into almost any classroom or homeschooling routine.
Start class with a 10-minute word warmup.
Use the digital version or a tactile word block set. Give students a few minutes to rearrange words, explore possibilities, and create something of their own.
Let students share, compare and discuss.
Invite students to read their creations aloud, share in small groups or display them for the class. Ask: How did different arrangements change the meaning, mood or feeling of the original words?
Make homeroom a place for play.
Use the digital version as a quick creative activity during homeroom or another transition period. It gives students a chance to slow down, focus and engage with language before the day gets underway.
Turn a creation into a conversation.
Use students’ renovations as a springboard for exploring tone, imagery, figurative language, word choice and meaning. There’s no single “right” answer, which gives a natural way in to interpretation and discussion.
Go from rearranging to writing.
After creating a renovation, challenge students to write a few original lines inspired by their arrangement. What new idea, image or story emerges?
Teacher tip: Not every student has to share aloud. Give students the option to create privately, share with a partner, or present to the whole class. The freedom to experiment without worrying is part of the magic, so let the students do what feels most comfortable for them.
