Working with a client who has a special interest or who speaks a different language? You can make word banks for that. Wondering what will emerge if you rearrange words from a poem you wrote? Put it into a word bank and give it a try! The possibilities are endless.

Make It Personal
Choose words that connect to personal interests, memories, hobbies, careers, favorite places or the current season. Personal words naturally spark more conversation and creativity. Or, keeping copyright restrictions in mind, try using words from a song or book of your choice!
Keep the Mix Balanced
Include a variety of words:
- Nouns (garden, lighthouse)
- Pronouns (I, you, he, she, they)
- Verbs (discover, laugh)
- Adjectives (peaceful, colorful)
- Conjunctions (and, but, or)
Explore Different Languages
Custom Word Banks can also be created in different languages or include a mix of languages. Whether your participants speak Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, or another language, using familiar words can make the experience more welcoming and meaningful.
Focus on One Theme
Instead of adding random words, create a clear theme such as:
- Summer Memories
- Family Traditions
- Connecticut Landmarks
- Favorite Foods
- Gardening
- Music Through the Decades
- Travel Adventures
Limit Word Count
poemRENOVATION’s Custom Word Banks feature lets you add up to 100 words to each word bank, but that many words might be overwhelming. Between 30 and 40 words typically offer plenty of creative possibilities.
Share Your Custom Challenge
Once you’ve saved your Custom Word Bank, you have the ability to share it with a friend, client or student. Here’s how:
- Return to your “Custom Word Banks” page, click “Play,” next to the word bank you want to share. A blank canvas will appear, with your custom word bank below it.
- Below the word bank, click the “Play With a Friend” button to generate a link to your custom word bank.
- Send the link to whomever you choose, so they can try it out.
- Note: The link, once sent, will only function for 24 hours.
